Apple tablet: gamers braced for console battle?

The Apple tablet’s expected debut can’t come soon enough at this point, with so many rumours and Photoshopped “leaks” winging around the web right now. We reckon Sony and Nintendo might be happy if the Apple iSlate/iPad stayed vapourware though: a new survey shows a large chunk of the public willing to defect from their DSs and PSPs for one.

Cashing in on the hype around the Apple tablet, VoucherCodes has been quizzing the man on the street about what he’d like to see from the much rumoured Apple slab. A survey of 3,000 people found that 54 percent would buy the Apple tablet, with almost half (46%) only prepared to pay up to £250 for it. But more eye raising is that 49 percent of those surveyed said they’d buy an Apple tablet over a Nintendo DS or Sony PSP – if it played games.

10 lessons the Apple tablet can learn from the iPhone

It’s not a majority, no, but it’s still an impressive vote of confidence for the Apple tablet considering it doesn’t even officially exist yet. If it does get unveiled tomorrow however, we’d be very surprised if games weren’t a big selling point: they have been on the iPhone and iPod touch, and Apple has specifically invited games publications to its San Francisco event.

What do you reckon? Could a big screen Apple tablet dislodge the insanely successful DS from a place in your bag? Will controls be a problem? We’ll find out what’s what tomorrow, but in the meantime, voice up with your own two cents below.
