Apple tablet or new iPhone? Mystery device spotted online
Whether it’s an Apple tablet or a new look iPhone, we’re expecting more than a minor update from Cupertino at its big keynote on Wednesday. But whatever it is is already hopping online and downloading apps, according to new analytics. So which is it, iSlate or handset?
Mobile analytics firm Flurry claims to have detected more than 50 devices, running the (unreleased) iPhone OS 3.2 in recent months, and all within the area of Apple’s HQ in Cupertino, California.
Flurry reckons these devices are likely to be the Apple tablet, but we’re not so certain. iPhone OS 3.2 rather than 4.0 suggests only a minor update, and given we’ve got a lot of money riding on the Apple tablet actually multitasking, we’d have thought the table would arrive with a radical overhaul of the software.
10 tablets the Apple tablet must conquer
It seems more likely that this is an early prototype of the next iPhone, which should appear in June if Apple sticks to its release schedule for the past few years, especially since usage has only heavily increased this month – surely Steve Jobs’ minions would have been testing out an Apple tablet for much longer before its big debut?
Whether it is the Apple tablet or a prototype of a new iPhone, it appears that a potentially different screen resolution may not be an issue: Flurry reports that 200 iPhone apps it tracks have been downloaded on to the anonymous gadgets.
