Other tablets that failed to attract consumer attention are the Eee Pad Transformer, manufactured by Asustek Computer, and Xoom which is produced by Motorola Mobility department, a recently Google acquired company.

The Play Book tablet produced by Research in Motion (RIM), which also produces the Black Berry, hadn’t exactly received favorable reviews and as a result the sales were poor, but the product will probably survive on the market, because of RIM's key marketing strategy. In addition to these aspects, Apple's rivals have failed even in the software development part for tablets. The Apple IOS has 61.3 percent of the market, double compared to the next product, the Android developed by Google's development team. Microsoft has just a small place with 4.6% of this market, and RIM only 3.3%, according to Strategy Analytics.

However, things could change soon as many analysts say. Google just bought Motorola Mobility, a powerful known hardware manufacturer which raised the Google potential to become a stronger competitor in this segment and even overpass Apple. Now attention is turning to the Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, which will unite the Android operating system versions for tablets and smartphones, which could and most surely will encourage software developers to create better software applications.

Microsoft also could pose a threat to Apple, with the launch of Windows 8, but this system will be available in late 2012. According to Microsoft officials, the system will run on multiple platforms, including traditional PCs, laptops and tablets alike but many seem the latecomer as too late. Last but not least, Amazon.com the maker of the popular e-reader Kindle, might launch a tablet this autumn. Colin Sebastian, an analyst with Robert Baird & Co., says that this tablet could change the rules of engagement and will run on the Android Honeycomb operating system platform, with a 7 inch screen and a price of under $300.

According to Sebastian, the Amazon tablet could sell over 3 million units in the first year, with the potential to exceed the number 2 player in this market, the Galaxy Tab produced by Samsung.

The problems of other companies have not discouraged Sony which plans to launch two tablets in the fall.
