src="http://cdn.mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/steve_jobs-260x1901.jpg" align="right" style="margin:10px;">We’re still a couple of hours away from Steve Jobs taking the stage to unveil target="_blank" href="http://mashable.com/apple-tablet/">Apple’s tablet, but target="_blank" href="http://mashable.com/social-media/twitter">Twitter appears to already be feeling the weight, with timeline delays hitting the service this morning.

As of 11:00am ET, target="_blank" href="http://search.twitter.com/search?lang=en&q=timeline">timeline delays for many users have swelled to 4-5 minutes. That means the whole “real-time” aspect of using Twitter for breaking news is out of play at the moment, which is especially damaging on a day where so much breaking news is expected ( target="_blank" href="http://mashable.com/2010/01/26/state-of-the-union-address-online-video/">Obama’s State of the Union address also airs tonight).

Of course, such issues are far from undocumented in the brief history of Twitter. It was a little more than two years ago that a target="_blank" href="http://mashable.com/2008/01/15/macworld-twitter-crash/">Steve Jobs keynote at Macworld brought down Twitter, then in its infancy. Oh, how times have not really changed that much.

Update (2:00pm ET): Twitter seems to be catching up, but target="_blank" href="http://status.twitter.com/post/356402310/working-on-tweet-delivery-delays">they have temporarily disabled Lists and Local Trends while they work to address the problem.
